Time for School: Supporting Education in the Community
The school in this community is a Proheco school, part of a rural Honduran education initiative that gives local communities signficant autonomy over the school. Teachers in Proheco schools earn about half of what teachers make in typical public schools. This school, which opened in 2004, serves kindergarten through 6th grade with one teacher for kindergarten and three teachers for 1st through 6th grades. While education is free through 6th grade, families must provide all required school supplies, and secondary education is not free.
Starting in 2024, we begin providing scholarships to community students continuing their education beyond 6th grade. Our approach emphasizes partnership with both parents and teachers to ensure that students awarded scholarships have a strong chance of success in secondary school. To support them, one of the community’s teachers will meet with the scholarship students monthly to monitor progress and offer assistance.
Here is a breakdown of costs for secondary education:
- Grades 7-9: $150 per year
- Grades 10-12: $190 per year
Education in Honduras: Key Facts
- Literacy Rate: 60%
- Primary School Completion: Only 43% of children enrolled in public schools complete 6th grade
- Secondary Education Enrollment: 30% of children who begin 1st grade continue to secondary school
- University Enrollment: Only 8% of children go on to university
- Gender Disparities: More females attend secondary school than males
- Many young men work to support their families, are recruited by gangs, or migrate to escape gang activity
- Among those of secondary school age, 41% of males work, compared to only 9% of females
Our mission is to help bridge these educational gaps by investing in the youth of this community, opening doors for them to pursue secondary education and beyond.
