Medical clinic in the community
Through a pastor friend, we connected with Marlen, a local doctor in Danlí, who agreed to serve our community two Saturdays a month. We then went about creating a clinic in the community, setting it up in the new classroom the community built, stocked it with medicines and donated medical equipment, and invited people in the community to come.
We had awarded a scholarship to a community resident to attend nursing school, and she now practices her skills in the clinic. José’s wife, Maylin, who has experience in medical clinics, also helps. Together with other volunteers, they run an efficient clinic.
In March 2023 the clinic was opened. The clinic provides two times a year free well-child checkups for children under 11, monthly free checkups for pregnant women, and general consultations. Both children and pregnant moms receive free vitamins. The cost is 20 cents for a consultation and 20 cents per prescription. If a patient needs further care, the doctors will personally ensure the person receives the needed care in the local hospital.
In mid-2024, demand grew beyond our capacity. We prayed for help, and our prayers were answered with Erica, another local doctor, joining the team. Since then 2 other doctors have offered their services in the clinic. These doctors bring compassionate, professional care to a community often overlooked. Their dedication to this community is a true blessing for everyone here.
In our discussions with the teachers in the local school, they have noticed a difference in the children’s’ ability to learn and pay attention in class. They attribute this to the vitamins the children receive and the lunches provided at the school.
