Replacing roofs in the community
How do you introduce yourself to a community living in a landfill in a third-world country? I don’t think anyone has written a book for that (or had they?). After prayer and careful thought, we decided our first and ongoing project would be to replace roofs in the community. Our approach is simple: we bring the materials, tools, and food, hire men from the community to work alongside us, and the family whose home we are repairing joins us in the effort. So far, we’ve replaced 38 roofs, with many more still to go.
Through this hands-on work, we’ve built relationships and heard countless stories of hardship. We’ve learned so much from these experiences—perhaps the most important lesson is how much Jesus desires for us to work together and listen to each other.
