It is estimated that 87% of Hondurans have access to an improved water source. The people in the Danli trash dump have access to water, but only for one day a week. Yes, water is available at the public faucets one day a week, and dry six days a week. However, in the summer months of March and April, the water source dries up and there is NO water available. For those months the residents are dependent upon the fire department bringing water up to them. Every house has some type of water cistern to store water for washing and drinking, however, we have learned many of these cisterns have leaks and they do not have the money to fix their cisterns. One of the ladies in the community, Jenesia shown in the pictures, has a large collection of water containers she fills up each week so she can provide water to people in the community who have none. She is an example of someone loving their neighbor.
There are people who walk to the trash dump from other communities to work recycling material from the dump, which means that six days a week (or seven during the summer months) they do not have access to water during the day except for what they can bring with them or others share with them. Working in the trash dump you are in the direct sunlight, it is hot, dirty and flies are everywhere, I can’t imagine doing that work while constantly thirsty. Many who were working in the dump requested water from us so we made sure to have a supply of water bags (small plastic bags of 12oz or so of water), but at best that was a temporary solution to the water problem. We have begun the work to identify a water solution(s) for these people that they may access to water daily. We are also going to work together to seal the leaks in their water cisterns. Please pray that the Father would give us wisdom and favor so we can arrive at a good solution sooner than later. Your prayers and support are much appreciated.
